MISSPELLING MONDAY: February 28, 2011
This post is brought to you by the letter E...since we have a couple to spare. ;)
It's too faint to see when the picture's this size, but someone did at least try to cross out the e in "handleing." But the vigilante proofreader didn't appear to cross out the extra e in "jewelery," so I guess he or she missed that one...
Thanks to MICHAEL for spotting this sign!

Location, location, location...
In this case, it might help if the location was spelled correctly.
I harbor a mild hatred for San Francisco since their silly baseball team beat my favorite baseball team in last year's NLCS, but even I can't help but pity poor San Fran when I look at this advertisement.

Obama be *what*?
Really, Copyeditors Needed Now? You couldn't put a "Will" or a "Can" in front of "Obama be beaten in 2012" to make it a complete sentence and not something that looks like what a little kid might write? There was plenty of room to do so, and you...just...didn't. It's sad, really--there's no excuse for that sort of laziness with writing and proofreading. Can those Copywriters Needed Now folks really not find any better writers and editors than people who think "Obama be beaten in 2012" actually sounds good as a headline?

To/Too/Two Tuesday: No, silly baseball writer, "birth" is not the same as "berth."
Well, I'm really glad to see that Dunn has never had a postseason birth. That would be really distracting on the field, wouldn't it? Then again, if the White Sox are playing the Twins...I'm all about that distraction (maybe it'll make the ChiSox lose their focus, which in turn could help the Twins win). I'm assuming fellow Twins fan KIRSTEN, who sent me this error, agrees with that sentiment!

MISSPELLING MONDAY: A not-so-beautiful spelling error
Hmmm. This picture does not scream beauty to me. It screams worn down, closed up, not so pretty, and quite misspelled.
(Psst--want to find out about some products that do scream beauty? Click here to check out this article on candylicious beauty and click here to read about bright, bold lip stains! Oh, that darn kess!
This is a timely error for me, as I'm sitting here trying to decide whether or not I want to get tickets for the upcoming Strokes show at MSG...
I've heard the new Strokes single, and I'd give it four stars, too. But I'd give whoever created that Facebook ad maybe one star...misspelling the song's title is really a silly, sloppy error. That being said, it's a funny error...every time I see "darnkess," I think picture someone getting annoyed about some darn kess. What's a kess? Your guess is as good as mine. But it sounds funny, doesn't it?

Hump Day Grammar: February 16, 2011
So a girlfriend invited me to a Passion Party type of thing...and I, being the snarky bitch that I am, had a feeling that the website associated with this party might, just might, have a couple Hump Day-related errors for me. So I searched that website...and found that I was right.
I didn't think testicles was that tough of a word to spell, but apparently these folks can't spell it. I was going to make the argument that if they'd just said balls instead, they'd probably have spelled that just fine--but balls just doesn't have the same ring that testicles does, huh?
And what the hell is that ling doing there? What is that even supposed to be? I haven't figured it out...

In other news, I've been writing my ass off lately. I don't always just write about makeup (although hey, this is a really fun article about Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils--complete with photos!)...I sometimes write about fashion, too. I got to write about the Betsey Johnson fashion show on Monday night...check it out here!

To/Too/Two Tuesday for February 15, 2011
Newsflash: affect and effect are not equals! Unless you're referring to how often the two words get confused and misused--I'd say they're probably about equal in that respect. But definition-wise, they're not the same thing. Argh.

This ad writer is clearly a little nuts...
Well, this is written rather awkwardly.
I get the sentiment here--elephants should work for peanuts, but you shouldn't have to. But whoever wrote this ad didn't express that sentiment so succinctly...
Thanks to STEVE for spotting this funny ad!
And on the topic of peanuts (and cracker jack), happy pitchers and catchers report day to anyone else who treats the beginning of baseball like a holiday! ;)

Foodie Friday: Pizzalicious!
This may not be technically wrong, but..."cook pizza from frozen" sounds kinda weird and awkward, doesn't it? I'm not a fan. (Well, I'm a fan of pizza, but not of this verbiage, anyway.)
Also, I love when stuff like "until filling at center reaches 162 degrees Fahrenheit." As if I'm going to stand there with a freakin' thermometer and actually take my pizza's temperature. Yeah...no. If the pizza looks hot enough, I will eat it. And don't even try coming between me and my pizza, or I will very likely also eat you. :)

Drug smugglers: way more creative than you might expect...
Drug smugglers are getting really clever and creative these days. A pot catapult? That's really thinking outside of the box!
Less clever, unfortunately, are folks like the copy editor who let the above mistake get published. "Soldiers seized found" just can't be right. Really, just one verb would have sufficed there...
Thanks to STEVE for spotting this one!

Hump Day Grammar: Dirty-sounding pseudo-words
I know, I know, the picture's a little blurry. But look closely and squint if you have to--it's worth it. That red underlined "word" (I use the term loosely here) is "resuqest."
Maybe I'm just a big ol' perv (or more accurately, a scrawny little perv), but that "word' both looks dirty and sounds dirty when you try to pronounce it.
I'm leaving it up to you, dear (and perverted) readers, to give me your best (dirtiest?) definition of "resuqest." 1, 2, 3...GO!!!

Gym, you're killing me.
I don't mean the gym's killing me because I'm working out too hard and hurting myself (although I am actually breaking a sweat there, so that's proof that I'm expending some sort of energy, right?). No, the gym is killing me with its lack of spelling skills. I totally understand why this person spelled privilege this way--clearly the person tried to sound it out and spell it the way it sounds--but they didn't spell it quite right. A for effort, F for execution...

Four times the screw-ups, four times the FUN!
Oh, my...we've got ourselves a quadruple threat today!
1. This sign should say boys', not boys.
2. It should say long-sleeved, not longsleeve.
3. Turtlenecks is one word, dammit.
4. The word turtlenecks shouldn't have "turle" in it (whatever that is), but should have turtle in it.
Thanks to MICHAEL for finding this fearsome foursome of errors!
SHOP TALK: Valentine's Day Gifts & Wearables
This Valentine's Day, I'm going to be quite single--but that doesn't mean I don't have valentines to spend the day and evening with! My valentines are these guys...
...and I couldn't be happier about it. :)
February 14 is when Phillies pitchers and catchers report, and I'm gonna be in a state of baseball giddiness that day. Just knowing these guys are out there practicing, getting themselves prepared to be totally kickass this year, and looking ridiculously attractive in their red pinstriped uniforms...well, that's enough to make this little baseball fan feel all warm and tingly, you know?
On Valentine's Day, I'm gonna be wearing my new Cliff Lee shirt and probably also my red and white-striped thigh highs...but for those ladies who do not have a date with baseball on February 14, you may want to wear something more Valentine's-ish if you're headed out on a hot date. Here are some fun suggestions for festive Valentine's Day attire. (And guys, take note--any of these pieces would work well as a gift for your lady!)
These Marc Jacobs heels are hot, hot, hot!
This Betsey Johnson necklace is super-sweet...
These Vivienne Westwood shoes are SO CUTE...and they come in a variety of colors. This purple is my favorite...so fun!
This sparkly, gorgeous Tarina Tarantino pendant comes in a couple different colors, but I like this basic, sparkly red heart the best...
Speaking of sparkly red hearts, how cute is this clutch?
These Disney Couture earrings from the Alice in Wonderland collection have a slightly gothic feel to them, but I think they're sooooo pretty...
If you're staying over at your sweetie's house and need to pack some makeup for the morning, this lips-adorned Juicy cosmetic bag is absolutely perfect:
And if you're just bitter about the whole concept of Valentine's Day, this bracelet is perfect for you:
All of the above gifts/wearables can be found at endless.com--a retailer I love because they offer free 2-day and/or free overnight shipping on their items...so if you're coming down to the wire with no gift and/or nothing to wear, Endless is a great place to find a great gift and have it shipped quickly and free of charge. (They offer free returns, too!) Happy shopping! :)

A devil of an error: Does "The Rite" really feature satin?
Oh, my. This is quite the giggleworthy movie review.
First, I take exception to the phrase that starts out "The actor best known as Hannibal Lecter...". The actor is best known as Sir Anthony Hopkins. The role he is best known for playing is that of Hannibal Lecter. As it stands, this sentence seems awkward.
But it gets better (and by better, I mean worse). Then the writer confuses Satan and...satin. Yes, seriously. And there's truly no comparison--Satan and satin are vastly different. I love the way the sentence is written, though...the dramatic tone of the sentence makes "Satin" being at the end of it sooooo much funnier!
Thanks to YVIE for spotting these errors!

What's green, creamy, and misspelled...?
Yesterday I was a little ticked off. I was craving avocado (I'd been wanting to put it into a spinach salad), so I stopped by the grocery store on the way home. There wasn't an avocado in sight! There were plenty of them there last week (of course, when I wasn't having an avocado craving), but not there this week. I wonder who snatched them all up (and why...seriously, holy guacamole!). But the good news is that since there were no avocados for sale, there were also no signs advertising them--which means my grocery store didn't have any signage on which avocado could have been misspelled. Unfortunately I can't say the same for MICHAEL, who spotted this sign!

Tiger Woods, 5 strokes, 69...? Nope, not some weird golf fanfic--it's Hump Day Grammar.
Someone was either really clever or really innocently oblivious when creating this headline. They couldn't have possibly made this Tiger Woods headline sound any dirtier! And yes, this is an actual news article by a reputable news organization--not the latest headline on TMZ or some smutty sports-related fanfic!
The grammar's fine, really, but the way it was written...well, I couldn't help using it for Hump Day. Thanks to DENNY for spotting this headline!

Hurry the hell up, Spring. This weather's getting really old...
Hmmm...looks like somebody can't make up their mind about whether to keep the schools open or close 'em in crappy weather. Holy mixed message, Batman! Obviously this email wasn't from the Department of Clarity, but it's also kinda sad that it was from the Department of Education, who really should know better, you know? (Thanks, MICHAEL, for sending in this one!)
I am seriously soooooo sick of this awful weather. I don't remember winters being this bad before. I mean, in my opinion, anything that involves snow or ice is bad, but this winter it seems like we've had one massive storm per week. And it sucks. Spring needs to come pronto!
