Congratulations--I belong to a gym *and* I can spell!

So I've gone and joined a gym, and in the process I found a spelling error.  Whee!  Here's hoping that the gym will cure a little bit of my insomnia...and provide me with more RPI fodder.  ;)

On a related note, allow me to rant for a moment.  "Congratulations" is one of those words that gets me really, really cranky when I see it misspelled (and it's misspelled all the time).  That and "definitely."  I really feel that those two are inexcusable misspellings if you're over the age of 12 or so--those words are quite common, so people should make it a point to know how to spell them.

What misspelled words really tick you off?  I can't possibly be the only one here with misspelling-related pet peeves...

I'm with you on "definitely." Another one that gets me is "wierd" instead of "weird." I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of any right now. The next time I am proofing one of my sons' papers, I'll find a dozen more. Between getting their father's spelling gene and the deplorable job of teaching spelling that our school system does, they really don't have much of a chance.

separately - it just looks funny (and WRONG) spelled "seperately"

Okay, this one is silly -- but when people type "woah" when they really mean "whoa" it really drives me crazy! :)

I know that I am guilty of grammar errors, but piss poor spelling really grinds my gears. I cannot comprehend how even a small business would let something go out with glaring errors like that. What kind of reflection is that!?

@ Marie: Yes, "wierd" drives me crazy, too! Also, you're a good mom for trying to counteract the spelling genes your boys got from the other side of the family! :)

Bev--Agreed! I see that error all the time, too!

Maggie--not silly at all. "Woah" looks so strange! That would annoy me, too.

Liz--I hear ya! Businesses cannot possibly appear professional with lots of spelling errors in their communications. (Help the economy--hire a proofreader!) :)

"Definitely" is for sure one of mine, too. "Interesting" is another one. I also HATE homonym errors, especially when it is arguable whether it even IS a homonym. My friend, who is a high school math teacher, had a kid write on his test, "I could be are math teacher." I told him he should have responded, "But obviously not you're english teacher."

Ooh, how do people misspell "interesting"? I don't see that misspelled too often.

I'm with ya--homonym errors suck! They drive me crazy, too. And I love the witty suggestion you had for your teacher friend!
