HUMP DAY GRAMMAR for January 28, 2009

Just a heads-up--this one might be a little gross (in a TMI sort of way) for the guys out there. I see that there are some icky topics like cervical mucous (ew!) discussed in the picture above...so you've been warned!

MAGGIE, our fabulous goddess of gossip, is the second RPI reader to ever be brave enough to submit a Hump Day Grammar post. This one's pretty funny, too...it looks like the writer got obtaining and abstaining mixed up. (Yeah, because abstaining from sex and obtaining sex are so easily confused...riiiiiight...)

Thanks to MAGGIE for spotting this one! Happy Hump Day to everyone...I hope you get to obtain instead of abstain! ;)

It is sooooo ironic that I am eating apple sauce while reading about cervical mucous. I think if the author did more obtaining and less abstaining she'd figure out the whole birth control thingy.

Haha! I agree with you, Erika! And I hope you didn't lose your appetite when you read this post! :)

Depo has gone out of style? Since when?

Good question! Damned if I know. Then again, I'm not entirely surprised that the person who confused "obtaining" and "abstaining" would be a little out of touch when it comes to popular birth control methods...

Yes indeed. The author needs to get some facts straight for sure.

I'm wondering what the author was trying to obtain from sex...something besides a good time?

I also noticed the singular/plural error in the second line: "The last two methods she has tried has brought" Shouldn't that be "The last two methods she has tried have brought"?

@ LadyStyx: The person who wrote that blog post needs to retake her Health and Englsh classes!

Good eye, ChicagoLady--you're exactly right! :)

I need some help on this one.

"Abstaining." What does this word mean?

I'm up on pretty much all the words connected with sex but I've never used this one.

Is this something new?

THE GRAMMARPHILE said...

Dictionary.com says it means "To refrain from something by one's own choice."

You learn somethin' new every day, huh? :)

Behold the perils of assuming that your spellchecker is always right.

THE GRAMMARPHILE said...

Well, you know what happens when you assume things, right? You make an ASS out of "U" and ME. Of course, if you're silly enough to assume that your spellchecker's always right, then you've only made an ASS out of "U"." The ME part of that little equation is busy hitting Print Screen and saving that picture to use on Red Pen, Inc. :)

Oh, well this is never going to happen.

Who would even come up with such a useless word?

Oh... God da...

I'm abstaining from abstaining.

You tricked me. You tricked me.

I'm never coming to this si...

Ohhhh. There it is again.

Do you ever stop making with the evil?

THE GRAMMARPHILE said...

"Making with" the evil? Not sure what exactly that means. I've tried to abstain from being evil lately...

To be fair, this is an easy error to make; I've been trying to obtain sex for a couple of months, and keep abstaining instead.

THE GRAMMARPHILE said...

Awww! The situation would be more fun if it were the other way around--you've been trying to abstain, but dammit, you keep obtaining...

EVula said...

Best. Problem. Ever.

Damn right! :)
