Just one little letter can make quite a big mess...

Ahhh, typos. Typos have the uncanny ability to make me re-read a sentence several times (often staring at it in horror), make me giggle like crazy, and make me shake my head and wag my finger at the major news websites and organizations that often have typos hanging around in their published work. Some typos, like the two below, are harder to find--they're real words, so spell-check won't catch 'em--but still, there's no excuse. A proofreader with an an alert pair of eyes could easily pick out these types of offending typos before these pieces get published...but then how would bloggers like me have content to write about?

This one came from BRETT. Finally, it's an article about President Bush that contains some sort of screwy language-related mistake for which Bush himself is not at fault! Amazing.

And this one's from fellow punctuation princess/baseball enthusiast BECKY. We're pretty sure they meant to caption this one "Sails were at full mast...", but of course they had to add an extra letter into were to make us go "huh?" and re-read the damn sentence in order to try to make some sense out of it.

Got typos...or screwy punctuation, misspellings, or bad grammar? Send 'em to me so we can publicly mock them (because what else is this stuff good for, really?). E-mail me at thegrammarphile@yahoo.com!

Yay! Oh, I didn't notice this when I first sent you the sailing photo, but it says "FOTO" underneath it, too. What's that all about?

Maybe they just churn out their copy too fast, but the AP is really terrible for typos.

Must be an intern issue.

Hey, Becky! How did I not notice that crazy "FOTO" thing? I must still be on my hot baseball player high...sigh.

By the way--how do you feel about the Sox trading away Manny? Glad to be rid of him, or do you wish he wasn't traded?

Hiya, Dan! Yeah, I've noticed the AP is bad with typos, too. Somebody's gotta lay the smackdown on those interns! (Or not. The more typos they publish, the more potential blog material there is for me...)

I am definitely glad to be rid of Manny. I never liked him because he didn't hustle. My style of baseball player is scrappy. Example = Pete Rose. Manny has natural talent, but he's lazy and doesn't have a good attitude.

I've never been a Manny fan, either. I was nervous because I heard rumors he might get sent to the Phillies, and his attitude would really clash with the guys on the Phillies. Nice job with the Sox getting Bay, though--I have him on my fantasy baseball team and have been pleased with him this season!

Oh, no, I hope for your sake that the Phillies don't get him. The Philadelphia press would be all over him! He probably wouldn't be able to handle that.

Thank goodness the Phillies didn't get him. Doesn't look like the Phillies made any big trades, really. I thought I'd heard thy were interested in trading Victorino to the Rockies for Matt Holliday, but that one never came to fruition. I'm glad...Holliday's quite good, but Victorino is really speedy and fantastic at stealing bases!
