This one proved to be a little tricky for the Grammarphile...

I was obviously having a "slow" day when GAY sent this picture to me. The work day had been long and stressful, I was tired, and it took me forever to spot the mistake. I actually had to recruit a fellow grammar geek co-worker, AMY, to help me find the mistake. It took her a few minutes too, since she was experiencing much of the same work-related stress that I was. And then, like, ten minutes later, when we'd both figured out the error, we had a good laugh over how obvious it was (and how oblivious we were!).

In case you're having a slow day, too, the error is an agreement issue. It should read "About 1 in 50 U.S. infants is a victim of..."--this is because the verb that follows the word infants is supposed to agree with the number 1, not the number 50. Get it now? I finally do!

Gracias to GAY for sending in this picture, and thanks to AMY for helping me spot the mistake!

My husband and I went to private school, and we had grammer hammered into us. That doesn't mean I'm great at it, but it does mean I notice lots of mistakes around me, so I think I'm going to enjoy your website!!
