We're having *what* with our cocktails...?

There are certain words and phrases out there that are not, by origin, English, but that have been used so frequently in common dialogue spoken in English that they may as well be. It's fairly common, for instance, to consume hors d'oeuvres alongside cocktails at fancy gatherings.

However, it's pretty uncommon--not to mention unsavory--to imagine dining on (or, um, devouring) "hors devours." What exactly are those made of, anyway?

I don't think I really want to know.
